How MARE Supports Families on the Path to Adoption

How MARE Supports Families on the Path to Adoption

The journey to adoption can be complex, and Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) is here to make that process as smooth and supportive as possible. Whether you’re just starting to explore adoption or are well on your way, MARE offers comprehensive support and resources to help you every step of the way.

1. Information for Starting the Process

At MARE, we want families to feel informed and prepared as they begin their adoption journey. To help families understand the process, we offer various resources and opportunities to learn more:

  • Explore Adoption Webinars: These online sessions are perfect for families who want to learn more about the adoption from foster care process. Emily Goldberger, our Family Support Services Coordinator, hosts an engaging presentation that will tell you what you need to know about the adoption from foster care process in Massachusetts and direct you on next steps to take to move forward in the process. You can also watch an on-demand version with our Director of Family Services, Liz Joyal.
    • You can register for a live webinar here.
    • Watch the on-demand webinar here.
  • “How to Adopt from Foster Care” Website Section: This section on our website provides an overview of the adoption process, with detailed information to help families navigate every step. We also offer a downloadable e-book of this information.
    • Visit the website here.
    • Download the e-book here.
  • Automated Emails and Personalized Support: Once families create an account with us, they’ll receive helpful automated emails guiding them through key steps in the adoption journey. MARE’s dedicated team is also available for individual phone calls to answer questions and provide personalized advice.
  • Ongoing Support: We know that adoption is a long journey, and our team is here to support families from the first inquiry to the finalization of their adoption.

2. Support Throughout the Process

Families need continuous support, and MARE offers a variety of services to ensure they feel connected, informed, and encouraged:

  • Family Support Services Staff: Our knowledgeable staff members are available to answer questions, offer guidance, and discuss any concerns families may have.
  • Support Group for Families of Color: MARE hosts a dedicated support group for families of color, creating a space for connection, shared experiences, and mutual support.
  • Friend of the Family Mentor Program: This program pairs prospective adoptive families with mentors who have been through the process, offering real-world insights and emotional support. Learn more here.
  • Specialized Trainings and Webinars:
    • “Ask Me, I Did It”: This program invites families who have successfully adopted to share their stories and answer questions from prospective families.
    • TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention): TBRI training focuses on building strong, trust-based relationships with children who have experienced trauma. Learn more and register for upcoming TBRI trainings here.
    • Transracial Training: MARE offers resources and events to help transracial adoptive families navigate the unique dynamics of adopting youth from a different racial or cultural background.

3. Matching Services

Matching is a crucial step in the adoption journey, and MARE is here to support families in finding the right match:

  • Caregiver Assessment Registration: By registering, families can gain access to a wider pool of children, including those who may have additional needs or unique backgrounds. Our team also assists by summarizing family assessments and sharing them with adoption workers.
  • Matching Events: MARE organizes several events throughout the year where families and children can connect in a comfortable, supportive setting, making the matching process more personal and meaningful. See our upcoming events here.
  • Inquiries: Families can submit inquiries about specific children, taking a more active role in exploring potential matches.

4. Referrals to Additional Supports

MARE understands that the adoption journey often requires additional resources, and we’re here to guide families to the right supports:

  • Referrals to Key Resources: We help families connect with services and supports that align with their needs, from counseling services to educational resources. MARE's network of partners and professionals offers a wide array of resources to assist families as they move toward adoption finalization.

At MARE, we believe that every child deserves a loving, permanent home, and we’re here to ensure that families have the support and resources they need to make that happen. If you're considering adoption or are already on the path, know that MARE is here to walk alongside you.
