Megan and Ben’s journey to adoption began in an unexpected but beautiful way. Longtime friends who lived in different locations, they reconnected during the pandemic and soon realized that their connection was deeper than friendship. As they planned their future together, one important conversation emerged: the desire to start a family. Both in their 40s, they knew that biological children might not be an option, so Megan suggested exploring foster care adoption.

That summer, Megan and Ben took their first steps toward welcoming a child into their home. They completed their home study process and attended a MARE matching event, where they were introduced to the profiles children waiting for a family. As they carefully considered each one, a social worker approached them with a question: Would they be open to adopting a child with complex medical needs? Without hesitation, Megan said yes—children with disabilities were close to her heart due to her profession.

The social worker introduced them to Kimberly, a little girl with a rare neurological disorder. Despite the uncertainty surrounding her future, Megan and Ben knew immediately that she was meant to be part of their family. After meeting Kimberly in person, their bond was undeniable. Kimberly moved in with Megan and Ben on August 18th, and just nine months later, they officially became a forever family.

Their adoption journey was remarkably smooth. Megan and Ben attribute much of this to the support system they built around them—friends, family, and even Kimberly’s former foster family, who remain an important part of her life.

Kimberly’s transition into her new home was filled with love and understanding. Megan and Ben quickly adapted to her needs and celebrated every milestone she achieved. Kimberly’s neurological disorder posed challenges, but she has continuously exceeded expectations, thriving in ways that have brought immense joy to her parents.

Now, Megan and Ben are considering expanding their family further. They are still foster parents and are actively looking to welcome another child into their home, ensuring that Kimberly has siblings to grow up with.
